Stage 3 portrait workshop

Group of students

Students at Oakhill Drive Public School have been studying the works of Australian Artists. This week our students were fortunate enough to hear from international award winning artist Evert Ploeg who is recognised as one of Australia’s leading portrait painters.

Internationally recognized, Evert was awarded ‘Best of Show’ at The Portrait Society of America’s 2011 International Portrait Competition in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a Certificate of Excellence in 2012, in Philadelphia.  In 2005, he was an Exceptional Merit Award Winner in the same competition.

Nationally, his work has been seen in Australia’s prestigious and often controversial Archibald Portrait Prize held at The Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 1997 his profile was immediately elevated when he submitted a portrait of ‘Bananas in Pyjamas’. Evert has twice won the coveted Archibald People’s Choice Award in 1999 (Deborah Mailman) and 2007 (George Ellis) and it’s Packing Room Prize in 2004 (Jana Wendt). Winner of the 2016 Hunters Hill Art Prize and represented in The once only, AGNSW Sporting Portrait Prize in 2000, with a portrait of Paralympian Louise Sauvage.

This week students in years 5 and 6 learnt about form, light, perspective, tone and colour. Each student is currently painting a portrait ready for our very own Archibalds. Evert led some of our students through an observational study from life ‘Planes of the Head’.

He described the results as extraordinary.
