Positive Education

At Oakhill Drive, we believe that wellbeing and relationships are at the heart of education. As such, we have implemented a whole-school approach to Positive Education. This means that the principles of personal wellbeing and positive relationships are taught to students, to parents, teaching and non-teaching staff, and also to the wider community.  This is reflected in our school vision 'Our students will gain the skills, knowledge and attitudes, that will prepare them to be creative, connected and collaborative lifelong learners. Our students will be encouraged to become healthy, well rounded, global citizens who contribute to the creation of the common good in today’s knowledge based, dynamic, interdependent world.'

Positive education at Oakhill Drive is a journey in which learning is ongoing and school practices and procedures are continually reviewed and adapted to align with this approach. It is not a program, but 'a way of being' that is embedded in all that we do.

  • At Oakhill, positive education is a priority for our students. Through teaching valuable life skills, our school provides  students with an increased capacity to learn effectively, as well as offering them a strong foundation on which they can build a successful life.
  • Positive Education brings together the science of Positive Psychology with best practice teaching to encourage and support individuals, schools and communities to flourish. We refer to flourishing as a combination of ‘feeling good and doing well’. Positive Education focuses on specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience, promote mindfulness and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
  • Throughout their time at Oakhill Drive, our students are exposed to Positive Education through the PDHPE syllabus, as well as through other key learning areas and in the playground.
  • Our school believes that following ‘The Golden Rule’ promotes empathy and kindness among our students. The Golden Rule means "treat people the way you would like to be treated." This 'way of being' prepares our students for life beyond the classroom.

Positive Education at Oakhill Drive encompasses three main areas.

At Oakhill Drive, we focus on the five aspects of Wellbeing which we refer to as SPECS (Social, Physical, Emotional, Cognitive and Spiritual). In order to be considered "well," it is imperative that all aspects are addressed.

Resilience

Resilience is our ability to bounce back after we have struggled, faltered or failed. It is being able to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, take a moment or two to collect ourselves and then to continue to pursue our goal. If involves optimism and a belief that we can all improve and grow.
