Parents and Positive Education
Building a positive school culture, involves all members of the school community. This includes students, staff and parents/carers. Research tells us that a strong home-school partnership is integral to the enhanced learning and wellbeing of students. At Oakhill Drive, the parent community and its representative body, the P&C, is actively involved in many aspects of school life. Parents participate each day by assisting teachers in the classroom, volunteering their help with the canteen, uniform shop, band, dance troupes, choirs, sport groups and many other areas.
Parents are also our partners in learning. We recognise parents to be the ‘experts’ on their children and the greatest influence in their children’s lives. Parenting is a difficult job at times and the school supports parents in many ways to be able to best support their children in their wellbeing as well as their learning.
On this page, parents can find links to resources that are relevant to our current Positive Education programs and specific external events.
Parents are being supported by:
- Parent information sessions and workshops e.g. managing anxiety, building resilience, having solution-focused conversations, mindfulness, restorative practices
- Access to Positive Education lessons that are being explicitly taught in classrooms
- Provision of fact sheets from reputable organisations such as Beyond Blue, that are regularly replaced with topics that align with current school learning or wider news events
- School newsletter items most weeks, about wellbeing information on a specific topic
- Access to SchoolTV, a web-based resource for parents providing information from experts each month about specific mental health topics. This resource is valued and funded by the P&C each year.
- Invitations to participate in whole school events for special days such as Harmony Day, Kindness Day, RUOK Day and Wellbeing Wednesday, our annual celebration of wellbeing learning.
- Involvement in consultation sessions about new and revised policies and procedures
Positive Education goes beyond the school gate. We value the involvement and input from our parents as they learn alongside our students and teachers. Opportunities for feedback from parents is sought regularly through formal focus groups, surveys, exit passes after workshops; as well as informally through graffiti walls, anecdotal conversations and ongoing communication.
