Individual wellbeing
Wellbeing- 'A sustainable state of positive mood and attitude, resilience and satisfaction with self, relationships, and experiences at school (Dept Education, Employment & Workplace Relations). At Oakhill Drive, we focus on the five aspects of Wellbeing which we refer to as SPECS (Social, Physical, Emotional, Cognitive and Spiritual). In order to be considered "well," it is imperative that all aspects are addressed.
The following concepts are taught under the topic of Wellbeing.
Character strengths can be defined as positive traits reflected in thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
Research shows that strengths are pathways to wellbeing – our own and others. It provides a common language for discussing the best qualities in each other. At Oakhill Drive, we use our character strengths to create a positive uplifting environment that inspires participation and motivation.
At our school, we embrace gratitude. Gratitude is a purposeful action that builds relationships while increasing one's own wellbeing.
Gratitude requires us to:
- Take action that serves others
- Give back
- Give up
- Say sorry
- Let go
- Clear the air
- Connect
Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment with an open and curious mind, without judging.
At Oakhill Drive, we teach children to care for their minds just like they learn to eat well and stay fit. A short daily mindfulness practice of five to ten minutes can help students reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and engagement, sleep better, build social skills, and develop problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Learning to control and calm the mind is a valuable skill for life.
Some mindfulness activities used at Oakhill Drive include:
- Paying attention to the breath
- Listening carefully to sounds
- Quiet mindfulness exercises
